Amazon has released a list of the top 10 best-selling games of 2018.
With 2019 now upon us, we can take a look back at 2018’s sales since they’re completely finalized. Sales reports and figures that have been released to the public are now available on Amazon so we can get official sales data from the world’s largest online retailer.
Amazon publishes its own sales number for video games each year. After taking a look at the report, it’s no surprise that the best-selling games were also the most-anticipated, as they’re somewhat proportional factors for typical cases.
The Nintendo Switch tops the list with the majority of games and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate makes the number one spot on the list. SSBU was already the top-selling game for all video game merch a few weeks back when it launched- overtaking accessories and even e-gift shop cards, membership cards, and service subscriptions.
Switch games make up the most of the top 10 list probably due to being Switch exclusive. Many of the other games released on Xbox One, PC, and PS4 are all on various platforms, so sales are distributed accordingly. The switch has exclusive games and thus can only be purchased on the Switch, which is why Switch games dominate the list when you think about sales data in terms of console-specific games.
However, overall aggregate sales allow us to see the list of best-selling games purely based on sales data (which isn’t pictured here). Amazon doesn’t compile Xbox One/PS4 versions of games under a single position but rather based purely on one version of the game on a specific console.
This means a chunk of sales for a game is missing if it’s released on multiple platforms. For example, Black Ops 4 sales data was taken just from PS4 sales and nothing else. You take that number and pit it against something like God of War, which would then be an unjust comparison.
Also, these numbers are just from Amazon. While Amazon is a good representation of sales data across the US, there’s still room for error.
But given that it’s the world’s largest online retailer, the numbers are a good sample of data in 2018 to show which titles did the best in sales throughout the entire year. We can get more specific sales reports from the NPD Group as they publish their report in a few weeks.
