The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening remake on the Nintendo Switch is making big news.
Wednesday’s reveal shocked many players and fans of the game, but once the gameplay trailer rolled out, the crowd went wild. The remake will have a whole new art style with chibi/toy-like drawings for the enemies and landscape. Some fans didn’t like this because it looks like something straight of Wind Waker, but other fans adored the art.
The art style sparked a huge divide between the fans of the game. Some liked the more realistic art from Hyrule Warriors or BoTW. But others like the direction Nintendo was going with this art.
Nintendo Power Podcast of this month also talked about the reveal at Nintendo Direct. Bill Trinen started to talk about his thoughts on the game after the focus shifted from Super Mario Maker 2. Trinen says:
“The team’s been working on it for a while now, but for me I was so excited this game was coming to Nintendo Switch,” he said. “If you think back, it’s one of the earlier Zelda games that I think has been really ripe for being recreated that has never been redone.”
“One of the things that I love about Zelda is that fact that with just about every entry they redo the art style. It’s one of the few series where it’s just constantly changing with every installment of the game.”
“I think they’ve kind of nailed it this time with the look of this little miniature world and Link running around in there. It’s perfectly suited for sort of this 2D top-down view.”
Just from this thought, you could know that he’s definitely cool with the new art style. The podcast went into detail about the reasoning behind Nintendo’s choice on using this art style and you can shove that podcast into anyone’s face who disagrees otherwise.
Honestly though, this art style is cool. But to each their own.
