You can kill any NPC you want in The Outer Worlds

For those that are waiting for The Outer Worlds, Obsidian Entertainment has some pretty awesome news.

For those that like to kill NPCs, players will be glad to know that there are no essential NPCs in this game.

It was revealed that the game will be more of a linear RPG rather than some sandbox game as many imagined. There are no essential NPCs in this game, meaning that you can go ahead and kill any NPC without it affecting your ability to progress to the game. The developers show this off at PAX East they can go around willy-nilly and do what you want.

During the panel, co-director Tim Cain and the lead designer Charles Staples and Senior narrative director Megan Starks presented this and this is what they had to say:

“During the game, if you’re on a regular playthrough, you’re unlikely to be fighting in [Byzantium], although you can kill everybody and anybody if you want,”

“As a designer, I’m always tempted to just have it made so that you can’t kill this person or that person!” she replied, when asked if there are any characters or quest-specific NPCs that players aren’t allowed to kill.

“But we have a philosophy where we feel like it makes for a better gameplay experience to allow the player to do these sorts of things,” she added.

During this PAX demo, they showed off the new feature similar to Fallout’s VAT called tactical time dilation. The combat system for this game and it’s pretty special and unique. Definitely worth watching the video to see how it works.

Starks has talked about the ability to kill NPCs in previous interviews.

The Outer Worlds is speculated to release on August 6th, 2019. Well, this was an accident to a leaked date on the Steam store page, so it’s not guaranteed to release on this day but it’s a date that makes sense. So as far as the internet is concerned, this game will release on that date or sometime near it. The outer worlds will be available for PC, Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4.
