Obsidian Entertainment has announced that their new upcoming project The Outer Worlds will only be available on the Epic Games Store.
The developer announced this during today’s Epic Unreal event at GDC. Publisher Private Division announced that the game will be released with Epic through a partnership where the game will only be available on the Epic Games Store and Windows Store at launch for the PC. Console versions will release on their respective stores.
With this kind of announcement, Steam fans will likely be very upset as they’ve been over the case of some other, ahem, Epic Store exclusives (Metro Exodus). The Outer Worlds won’t be available on Steam for those who want to play it on PC. And just like many other deals with Epic, the game be only available for purchase on two platforms for the first year upon release before migrating over to other digital platforms also.
Our partners at @EpicGames have announced that #TheOuterWorlds will be coming to the Epic Games Store at launch, alongside the Windows Store. It will be released on other digital platforms 12 months later.
The Outer Worlds will still release on XBOX and PS4 on launch.

Although this isn’t nothing new with Epic snagging another deal, many publishers are already working with them- with Remedy’s Control another recent deal. For those who are want to keep their games library on Steam, this will surely upset them. However, this should not force you to abandon the game entirely.
Obsidian Entertainment has been working very hard on their new “linear” RPG, so it’s still worth playing. Or at least check it out on consoles.

Writer and journalist for almost a year. Doing this for fun. Learned a lot along the way. I’m interested in businesses and the moves they make, tech and how it changes the world, and of course, enjoy playing some video games! I enjoy console and PC, but mostly RPGs, FPS, and League of Legends.
